Quantcast [Edit] Anyone Still Playing their Wii? - Ozymandias

[Edit] Anyone Still Playing their Wii?

Was just talking with a good friend this weekend about the Wii. He's been looking to buy one for the last few months but hasn't come across it yet. Anyway, we started talking about the games to play and what I recommended, and I suddenly realized that I'm really not even playing the Wii anymore!

The half of Zelda: Twilight Princess I played was great, but since then the only game that's gotten any real time was Wario Ware: Smooth Moves. And it's not for a lack of trying. I've rented literally every third party Wii title there is from Gamefly, and almost every single one wasn't worth playing - either due to horrible controls, or to being significantly graphically inferior to a PS3 or 360 version. (The one exception was Super Bubble Pop Bust-A-Move Bash! - the control worked quite well there, but then again, I'd expect it to considering the simplicity of the game mechanic.)

I still love the idea of the Wii, but the controls just haven't delivered as of yet. I've had concerns for a long time about their applicability to FPS titles. Those concerns are pretty well-validated at this point, and other genres seem to be having similar issues. I'm hoping Mario Galaxy or the new Metroid spark some excitement again, but I really feel like the Wii is turning into the Gamecube of this generation with amazing first-party titles, mediocre third-party title support. To be fair, it's still early, and a lot of third-parties were caught by surprise by the Wii's early success. Here's hoping the next wave of third-party titles amaze... if they don't, I really doubt the Wii will have any legs come next Spring. Sad

[Edit: Wrong game title - fixed.]

Nope.

I find it amazing that there's still such a huge demand for it.  You'd think the word would have gotten out that it's actually a fairly disappointing console.

Agreed...I bought a Wii at launch and it just sits next to my TV collecting dust.  The only time I turn it on is to get an update...AKA make the annoying blue light go away!  The VC is boring...old games I thought were fun as a kid, but now that I'm older they are pretty boring.  They really need to court some third-party casual devs, or create an in-house one and make some new stuff.  I've had a 360 since launch, and it is on at least 2-3 hours a day doing something, MCE, music, movies, etc...but I'm way beyond the $399 invested.  The Wii was cool but right now they need some cool games...and please, don't whore the Wii-mote anymore...just make games.  I could care less if they have motion controls.  At this point, I'd like my $249 back...

I have a lot of roomates so i spend a lot of time playing wii tennis and bowling.  Smooth Moves is good for multiplayer too.  I also still have at least 15 hrs left to go in zelda.

Honestly, though, the main reason i got the wii was for wii sports and the other casual games and its really come through for me;  never before have I gotten my girlfriend to play games with me and actually enjoy it.  Im hoping Wii Degree will get her to play even more.

Dont get me wrong, however, I am still gonna crap my pants when the real "gamer games" of Smash, Metroid, and Mario come out.  I will also definately pick up both Resident evil titles even though Ive already betean RE:4 on gamecube.

To be fair, I rarely play on my 360 anymore.  I played Crackdown to death (didn't take as long as I'd hoped), Lost Planet crashed continually and Gears of War was a bit short too.  Other than that there hasn't been a decent game in quite some time, and I have limited time/bandwidth for multiplayer sessions (I just play for short periods to relax and relieve stress now).

Here's hoping it's the quiet before the storm, as it were.

I just finished another level of Paper Mario last night (I'm up to world 6 now), and am savoring it like a fine wine because I don't see much coming.  I use the wii to supplement my 360 games.  Like you I'm a gamefly member, so what I've done is buy a couple of wii games, and mainly play them while I'm waiting for the 360 games to come in the mail.  That said, with the weak 360 offering this month, I'll be spending more wii time. (Unless Catan sucks it all up).

It does remind me of the DS launch, some nice titles in the beginning but then about a year before anything else was released. I remember playing more GBA games on it than DS games. Now it's better, and the 3rd party titles are better.  And look at the system sales... It just seems to me like Nintendo systems are geologically slow with new games after a launch.

My wii also get's a lot of hot hot party action, everyone still wants to play wii sports.

I think the wii will still be racking up sales next spring.  I'd rather have fewer high quality titles than an assload of things like Bullet Witch.

Im just kidding dude, props for finding a gaming girl--im jealous.

Im digressing from the topic here but now that im thinking of it, hopefully the girl gaming population will grow with this generation of consoles and particularly with the wii.  Miyamoto and his "wife-o-meter"(which he covered in his keynote at the GDC) and the way he saw her slowly get more interested into gaming (starting with causual games like nintendogs and slowly getting into more hardcore games until he came home and found her playing T.P.) is particularly promising.

ok that was poorly written and way off topic but i have to get back to work now so bye

Actually, still haven't put more than 2 hours into it. Touched Zelda for 10 minutes, and that's as long as I could stand it; sold RRR after finding out the controls make it nearly unplayable anyway; Wii Sports is good for kiddies and people who don't get videogames; Red Steel is a really bad game, poor control or not.

No sign of Super Paper Mario over here, not even a release date - once again showing what Nintendo thinks of Europe.

From the piles of unsold Wiis around these parts, I'd say the feelings are mutual.

Meanwhile, my 360 is burning up from all the Guitar Hero II I've been playing.

I actually sold mine.  Once I realized that Zelda was disappointing, and that novelty controllers didn't make minigames like Rayman or Wii Sports magically fun for more than about 20 minutes, it wasn't worth putting up with the godawful hideous graphics any more.

My 360 still gets regular play (except that at the moment, it's died yet again -- the fourth time was not the charm, apparently -- and I'm waiting for yet another box to whisk it off to McAllen, TX).

I did want a Wii but I was almost certain the 'novelty' factor of it would wear off and once I'd played a few hours of Wii sports, I wouldn't touch it. I feel like I've made the right decision. Lots of people seem to have gotten over the fun factor and now don't play it that much. I think you're right, I think it is destined to go the way of the 'Cube. There wasn't that many great games for that over it's lifetine and it slowly faded away. I can see the Wii doing the same.

I've been quite disappointed with my Wii as well. Every 3rd party title that I have rented has been junk. I do play a bit of paper mario now and again. But, overall, my Wii only gets played when I have people over. I'm getting far more play time out of the 360. I wish Nintendo would spend sometime to make an actual online service. And, I wish 3rd party games were better. I also wish the 360 had more/better party games. Then I wouldn't need the Wii at all.

you know i think you're right shuttlemoomin. . . chances are that the 6 million+ units sold in the first six months (just under 1/3 of what the gamecube sold in its entire 5&1/2 year span) are a fluke.  Chances are the the $400 average pricetag for a wii on ebay is just a lucky start for the boys from kyoto.  Chances are that the majority of financial analysts (both from inside and outside the industry) whom picked the wii to win this generation are wrong and you are right.

Sorry to sound like a sarcastic fanboy (though i do not deny being one), but i think its terrible forsight to think that the wii will do as poorly as the gamecube did.  The potential for new gamers alone could see to that.

I can provide sources for the analysts if you want, but again i really should work.

I will play Wario Ware or Wii Sports with the kids here and there, but that's about it. (GH2 has become the new hit party game). I'm not buying any games at all for it and am somewhat bored by it. I'm very curious as to the Wiis attach rate. The 360 is still where I spend most of my time and it's the superior console IMO. I have to say that the Wii graphics are irritating to me. It's hard to play all these good looking games on the 360 and then take a step down in graphics to play the Wii. I know I know... gameplay is important and all, but it's still really hard to see the downgraded graphics.

I'm not.  I played Wii Sports the most, Zelda and Paper Mario about the only games worth playing besides Wii Sports.  I just don't see much coming out that i'm interested in playing on the Wii.  Not sure why it's taking developers so long to get on the Wii-train and get stuff out for it, they've sold almost as many units as Microsoft has.  Anyway since developers don't know what to do with it and there's a total lack of quality games especially exclusives, i'm actually selling mine off to a buddy.  I'll pick up a wii again in a year if there's some worth while stuff for it.  But right now, i think people would get better game play out of spending an extra $50 on a 360 Core unit instead.  Sure there's no cool motion controlled controller but i'd rather have games to play with a traditional controller than nothing to play with a new controller technology.

I'm in the same boat--the Wii is really only played with friends who haven't played before and the times they return to play again.  I used to train in tennis and I got my score to 1800--but then it just turns into a grind to get to 2000.

I enjoyed zelda a lot and I'm having fun with paper mario--but the Wii isn't a hardcore gamer's console yet.  there aren't any games that you can get lost in (like on xbox/ps).

crossing my fingers as well for the upcoming releases that can salvage the Wii!

Well, I bought my Wii around a month after I got my 360 (around 2 months by now since I got the Wii) and I must say that, despite outbanking the 360 in my game hours for the first 3 days, its now mainly collecting dust. I find Wii Sports mediocre (a tennis game in which I can't even move my character? WTF!?), almost every game I tried is simply unplayable (Sonic, Call of Duty, Dragon Ball...) and of all I tried I only really ended spending time with Tiger Woods (I like golf, easily understable then), Gottlieb Pinball Classics because my father likes pinball and we play once in a blue moon and Red Steel because I find the control much better than CoD3 myself. On the other hand I must say that iis internet channel (Opera software) is a key success for the machine though, allowing my father to start knowing the internet a bit without having to use my computers (if he touches any of them he is dead man).

On the other hand there is no day I do not switch on my 360 I must say

This console generation is showing the importance of games.  Since the 360 has a year head start, there are a lot more good games, but the Wii and PS3 are kinda lacking in good games.  The Wii has too many mini-games and not enough games that have in depth plots AND innovative controls (like Zelda).  After trying COD on the Wii, I'm convinced the Wii wasn't made for shooters, as they're much better on the traditional controllers.  One thing the Wii needs is better online support.  It needs some good online games with the ease of having a username instead of a 16 digit code.

Personally, I there hasn't really been any games that have interested me so I only have Wii Sports and Zelda.  It's probably been about a month since I played my Wii.  I really hope some more really innovative games are released in the future.  I'm kinda looking forward to Wii Music.  It looks like it has the potential to be fun and innovative.

For the very few games I would enjoy playing, there's a slew of licenced shovelware titles from kiddy shows, a buunch of games from genres I don't overly care for and the rest are sub-par version of games I can get for the PC or the 360.

Frankly I figure I would play a Wii almost as much as I play my DS Lite, little to not at all.

@polezo: While I'm not denying for a second that the Wii has sold  very, very well and that demand is still very high, I was questioning how many of those sold are still played regularly, and judging by the small amount of posts here, it seems that my feelings are so far proved right: People want a Wii due to it's image and the boost that the demand has done to that, but no one I know who has one bothers with it these days and it seems they're not alone. How many people have bought a Wii and are 110% happy with the purchase so far and feel they've got their money's worth of entertainment out of it? Maybe not all that many. Just my opinion, that's all.

I queued up for a cube. I rushed home and got playing and also liked that fact I had one. I got some good gaming out of it but the hit games stopped coming and I stopped playing the cube at all. I can still see the Wii ending up the same way. I've seen little to make me think differently so far.

I haven't touched my 360 in ages apart from playing DVDs and the occasional Live Arcade demo. £50 a game is just too far above my budget.

I've been playing though Sonic and the Secret Rings on the Wii every now and then, it can be a right *** of a game some times, but it is actually an amazing 3D Sonic, a proper return to what made Sonic great.

But most of my game playing has been on the PS2. Okami is stunning and Guitar Hero 2 (especially for multiplayer) is simply brilliant.

I've also been playing indie stuff on the PC.

I haven't been playing my Wii all that much at all. I do enjoy playing the occasional game of Super Swing Golf though. My two most recent purchases were SSX Blur and Super Paper Mario.

SSX Blur was a disappointment, they stripped some things that gave the game it's charm. The controls kind of work but as I suspected it can be quirky if you're not very precise about it. I've since got rid of the game.

Paper Mario is probably the only new recent game that's good (In my humble opinion). Even then I barely play on the console. Not to say Paper Mario isn't a good game.

The only thing I'm looking forward to right now is a port of a gamecube game, Resident Evil 4. Other than that the only other game that seems interesting is MySims: http://mysims.ea.com/

I hardly fire up my Wii.  I got it on launch day on an impulse since I happened to be at Target when they brought them out.  I picked up Zelda, played it about halfway through, and went back to the 360.  I keep telling myself I will finish Zelda, because I've loved and played through every other one, but Twilight Princess just doesn't "move" me the way other Zelda games did.

Nothing else has come out that interests me.  The Wii is handy when a group of people come over--Wii tennis and Wario Ware were a hit at my BBQ last week.  But that's the only action my Wii has seen in at least a month.  I've been considering selling it now, since there is still demand for the console, and I can probably buy one down the road when there's something I actually want to play.

My 360 gets constant use... still play Halo 2 with friends at least once a week, GHII and arcade have been in heavy rotation, as has GRAW 2.  Once Halo 3 (beta and game) hit, that's all I will be playing.

Lost Planet not AAA enough? GRAW 2 ring a bell? Guitar Hero friggin' II with 10 new songs and downloadable content is peanuts? Shivering Isles I could count out, it's more of a AAAA title than anything.

Also, almost every single title that's been released on PS3 is currently on 360.

I think all consoles are doing very weak right now. Few  quality games. To single out the Wii because everyone expects it to do great is a bit unfair.

It's all about target groups. Perhaps the Wii is more for casual players. A hardcore gamer will chow through the gameplay in a weekend, while a casual gamer would play it a few hours a week. And take a month or more to complete it.

The 360 was slighly worse last year this time around with amount of games, something me and my friends complained about last year.

You had like 3 good games at launh or near it (Oblibion, Fight Night, GRAW), and nothing until Saints Row hit in the summer.  Then again a drought till GOW.  its finally picked up speed big time as everybody caught up to it.

Im sure its the fact that most publishers don't want to commit to an unsure console if it doesn't sell up to expectations.

I think the Wii did a good job of offsetting this with some a good amount of quality 1st party games so you won't be caught months not playing the Wii at all (like the break I took last year on the 360).

Sony on the other hand did drop the ball slightly with having so many of their exclusives pushed way back (FFXIII, MGS) and not having enough at launch.

TO compete with 360 the PS3 needed a lot of games at launch and soona fter that were exlcusive to the console.

All the Wii needs right now, IMO, is GAMES!  Its not that I don't want to like the system, or that all I want to play is my 360--its just that the games I want to play as an adult male are not generally Cooking Mama, Shrek, Pokemon, or another cutesy Mario.  Not that those are necessarily bad games--quite the contrary.  But I want titles aimed a little more at my tastes.  I'm still waiting on one.

Even developers who make only PC games are now jumping to develope for Wii.
