Quantcast Prince of Persia coming to Live Arcade - Ozymandias

Prince of Persia coming to Live Arcade

Ubisoft recently announced that they're redoing Jordan Mechner's original Prince of Persia game and releasing it on Live Arcade with updated visuals and puzzles. I can't tell you how much I loved playing the Apple II and PC versions of this game when I was growing up. It was one of the first platformers that combined exploration, combat, and puzzle solving seamlessly, as well as having some great story hooks that actually affected gameplay in a significant manner. (I'm purposely not going into details here in case you decide to play the Live Arcade version later this summer, but you can look it up if you care. For what it's worth, a similar story hook was built into the story for the first Prince of Persia game on the Xbox - great stuff!)

Below are a couple of updated screen shots, with thanks to Team Xbox.

Nice news indeed (as long as it is also released in Europe - sorry, being paranoid regarding the Aegis Wing announcement). This game brings me good memories of better and younger times, specially that mirror scene in the video of the other post. It will be interesting to see if the original difficulty level is somewhat weakened to adapt to current times (since many people do not want or simply cannot play for the required time in a row -you old timers know what I mean).

BTW, I guess we wont have the possibility of ussing the so-called prince -megahit command could we? :D

Oh man - Out of this World and Flashback... I haven't thought about those in a long, long time. I'd love to see remakes of those!

Actually Out of this World (aka Another World) has had a remake made this year by the same guy that made the original. It has upadated resolution graphics and backgrounds and runs over WinXP. There is a free demo on the game site at http://www.anotherworld.fr/anotherworld_uk/ and the full game is as low as 7euro. Also, it is not very well known, but Another World has somewhat a sequel, called Heart of the Alien in which you controlled the alien friend the main character had in the first game. Unfortunately this game only was made for the Mega-CD (MegaDrive/Genesis with the CD drive addon) console with no other versions available.

Regarding Flashback, although there is no official remake, you can get a grip on Reminiscence, a rewritten core for the original game to run on a variety of systems and consoles with homebrew booting capabilities. In order to use Reminiscence you will still need the original game files though. Flashback also had a lesser known sequel called Fade to Black in which we could find (I believe that for the first time) an over the shoulder 3rd person shooter in full 3D graphics (Tomb Raider, despite popular belief, was made much later than Fade to Black). Fade to black had PCCD and PS versions, this later being arguably technically better.
